Bjorn Borg's Underwear

You couldn't make this up if you tried...This is from the Media Bistro blog, as posted yesterday...

"Are you between the ages of 15 and 30? Do you have "a fashionable sense"? If so, then Björn Borg would like to sell you some underwear. Now living in Monte Carlo, the 52-year-old Swedish tennis legend helms (or at least lends his name to) a $370 million Stockholm-based brand empire founded on underwear. And while the Björn Borg online Underwear Shop notes that it does not currently ship to the United States "due to quota restrictions on exports to the U.S. of garments manufactured in China," the company plans to enter the U.S. market in August, reports Women's Wear Daily, as it strives to become a "global fashion brand."

"I wanted to create comfortable underwear for daily use, suitable for an active lifestyle," Borg told WWD. Michael Mohn, manager of the company's U.S. operation, described the Björn Borg target customer as someone "young, averaging 15 to 30, who has a fashionable sense and wants to make a statement wearing the underwear." A Diesel-like racy insouciance comes across in the company's website, parts of which resemble a Swedish-accented commercial for Orbit chewing gum. Our favorite part is the "Ask Björn Borg" section, in which we learn that BB has a golden retriever named "Lipton," prefers to start the day with "sandwiches with eggs and ham," and describes himself as "the first tennis player to wear fashionable clothes without really knowing it."

Villanova Sports Fans, Buy This Book!

The late Michael Connolly (Villanova '72) was a good friend to me during my time on the Villanova University campus, both as an undergrad (1980-1984) and as a staff member in the Wildcats athletic department (1984-1995)...He passed away suddenly in September 2001, and his wife Nancy finished the book he had been working on for so many years..."The Wildcats -- A History of Villanovans in Professional Sports" is a hardcover, 11x13" book with biographies of 175 Villanova athletes who have participated in pro sports, with 600 photos and 400 pages...I cannot recommend this project highly enough, as I saw Mike work on this book for so many years and I know it was a true labor of love...Be sure to order a copy -- I have one, and will buy more for my friends in the coming weeks...

Pat Burrell = 2008 MVP

Could it be? Can it happen? Why not? He sure looks good so far this year...Let's sign him to another contract before it's too late!

Joel McHale

We had the pleasure to see Joel McHale, host of "The Soup" on the E! Channel, this past Friday night at the Keswick Theatre in Glenside...Joel was very, very funny and performed on stage for well over an hour, which we both thoroughly enjoyed..."The Soup" is a guilty pleasure of mine for the past few years, and although I don't fit in the demographic for E or "The Soup" (at least not according to Joel in his stand-up act!) I never miss the show...Too bad Mankini and Lou couldn't make the trip, but if Joel shows up at a venue near you, I highly recommend it...His stories were hilarious and entertaining...I especially loved the quick, passing reference to the Jodie Foster movie "Nell," and my wife is still laughing over the "Sound of Music" bit Joel worked into his act...Too bad the lighting guy didn't get the joke!
